Our Three MOST Frequently Asked Questions:

Q:
I understand that I can download the Official Apple Hill® Cider Press guide. Does it require special software to view?

A:
Look for the Cider Press download links in the navigation bar to the left. There are TWO downloadable formats of the guide:
Adobe Flash: One is an animated "page turn" version which requires that you have Adobe Flash software installed on your device. Adobe Reader: If you don't have Adobe Flash available/installed or simply prefer, there is also a link to a webpage of "thumbnail" images of each Cider Press page that you can select to view the corresponding page of the guide.
In either downloadable version, the underlying pages are Adobe PDF fomat. Thus, you will also need the FREE Adobe Reader software for your computer (or Adobe Reader for mobile) running on your mobile device to view the pages. Try the links in the navigation bar to the left before deciding that you might need additional software, and as always, seek assistance from your technician or manufacturer prior to making changes to your device.

Location, Access & Facilities

Q:
Where is "the" Apple Hill®?

A:
There is no one ranch that is Apple Hill®. There are 56 of us and we invite you to enjoy the unique experiences that we each offer! Download a copy of the NEW online Cider Press guide, or download specific pages here. Printed copies of the Cider Press guides and maps are also available at each ranch.

Q:
How do I get to Apple Hill® from Sacramento? Or - from South Lake Tahoe?

A:
The Apple Hill® ranches are located north of Highway 50 between Placerville and Pollock Pines, about 1 hour east of Sacramento and 1 hour west of South Lake Tahoe. Recommended exits are Exit 48 or Exit 54. Apple Hill® Growers Association Cider Press guides can be downloaded from here (Flash version) or individual pages from here. Printed copies of the Cider Press guides and maps are also available at each ranch.

Q:
How do I find and get around Apple Hill®?

A:
Locate us on the California locations map (pg. 2 of the Cider Press guide), on the Apple Hill® map (pg. 20 and pg. 21 of the Cider Press guide) or at www.applehill.com/site/maps.html. A relaxing way to get around Apple Hill® during October weekends is to leave your car at one of the two Apple Shuttle Lots and take the free El Dorado Transit Shuttle (pg. 31 of the Cider Press guide).

Q:
Where can I find information on your Shuttle service?

A:
Check the El Dorado Transit Shuttle page for more information.

Q:
Where are your restrooms?

A:
While some ranches offer "real" restrooms, most ranches provide the down-home country, outdoor portable variety.

Q:
Can the ranches accommodate visitors with limited physical mobility?

A:
The Apple Hill Growers' ranches are working farms and many have uneven terrain and outdoor portable (Port-A-Potty style) toilets. There are some ranches, though, that are large enough for more paved areas and/or "real" bathrooms, making them a bit more user-friendly for our guests in wheelchairs and those who have vision or walking limitations. See our Mobility Concerns page.

Q:
Can I bring my dog along to the ranches?

A:
Dogs ARE allowed on a leash at most ranches - Ask first at the smaller ranches (which are very often the farmers' homes). As a courtesy and for the safety of others, dogs must be kept under control at all times.

Q:
When does the apple season start? And when does the __________ apple variety ripen?

A:
When the apples are ripe! The exact date varies. The "early" apples (Gravenstein, Jonathan, JonaGold, Gala, McIntosh) ripen in mid-August followed by Red and Golden Delicious in September. Most ranches open on Labor Day weekend. Contact a ranch that grows the variety you are interested in for specific ripening dates: Apples & Other Fruit Guide or via the Grower information page.

A:
Most ranches ARE open during the week in September and October. Smaller ranches may be closed in the middle of the week. Larger ranches DO have crafters during the week! Grower information page.

Common Questions Asked of the Growers

Q:
How many crops a year do you get off of your trees?

A:
Just one. But if you find some trees that can do more, please let us know!

Q:
What do you do the rest of the year?

A:
We plant trees, prune trees, irrigate trees, test recipes, have meetings, and enjoy the quality of the farming life. Most of us hold outside jobs too!

Q:
What is the difference between apple juice and apple cider?

A:
The difference is only the name. Apple juice and apple cider are the same stuff.

Q:
When do you put the sugar in the cider?

A:
Never! Our ciders are made from Apple Hill® apples - and nothing else.

Q:
What kind of apples do you make pie out of?

A:
Any kind. Everyone seems to have their own favorites for apple pie. The tart varieties require more sweetener. Some bakers prefer to combine a sweeter apple, such as a Golden Delicious, with a tart apple, such as a Granny Smith, for the sweet/sour taste combination.

Q:
Are your baked goods fresh?

A:
You can't get any fresher. They're all baked right on the ranches, usually the same day you eat them.

Website-Related Questions

Q:
Some links on your webpage are not working. Or - I receive a "404" error or other "File Not found" error when I try to open a link?

A:
Try using the Refesh button in your browser. Look for a circular arrows button in your browser window. Try using F5 (Windows or Mac). If you're still having trouble with the website, please contact us right away!

Q:

I can't open many of the pages on your website?

A:
Many of the pages and links on the Applehill.com site require that you have the FREE Adobe Reader application installed, as they are Adobe ".PDF" files. Normally, these files will simply pop open when you click the corresponding link. If you don't have Adobe Reader installed on your computer or mobile device, you will receive either a blank page, or an error. You will need the FREE Adobe Reader software for your computer (or Adobe Reader for mobile devices) running on your device to view either version of the downloadable Cider Press (Flash page-turn version or manual download version). Make sure that you review the software System Requirements before installing any application on your computer or mobile device.

Q:

I can't download/open the new online Cider Press guide?

A:

The online Cider Press guide uses Adobe Flash software installed on your device to enable an animated "page turn" effect to allow you to view each page magazine-style. You must have Flash capability on your computer or mobile device in order to view the guide in the page-turn format. The individual pages of the online Cider Press are Adobe .PDF files. When the Flash version of the Cider Press is open, clicking on the "Download This Page" link on each page will open the .PDF file for that page. From there you can read and/or print the pages, depending on the capabilities your device. You will need the FREE Adobe Reader software for your computer (or Adobe Reader for mobiles) running on your device to view either version of the downloadable Cider Press. Try the links in the navigation bar to the left before deciding that you might need additional software, and as always, seek assistance from your technician or manufacturer prior to making changes to your device.
